Whatever your budget is, you still have to pay for anything. Major credit cards are accepted in most places but be aware of the possibility of skimming or fraudulent transactions. Listen, these guys are pros and the likelihood of you finding them again, or returning to their shop, is zero. So with a quick flick of the hand and a couple of seconds of distractions, you can be a victim without money nor bank card. Be careful! We strongly recommend cash if you are going to a market or buying from a street vendor. Cash will always be king and with your hands clasping a bundle of bills, you are the king of haggling.

ATMs are available in many places and are safe. Scout around for a decent looking ATM and withdraw a couple of days of spending. You can also try to go to an exchange office, which is everywhere. The exchange rates are fair but some have add ons in fees so the deal isn’t that good in the end.

Some hotels also offer “inhouse” exchange offices. Often at a rate to your disadvantage. But it is convenient for the guests and that is what you pay for.

Public transport, taxis and tuk tuks are best paid for  in cash.
